Acupuncture for Systemic Lupus Erythmatosus (SLE)
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), also known simply as lupus, is an autoimmune disease. In this disease, the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue. It can affect the skin, joints, nervous system, brain, kidneys, heart and lungs. Common symptoms include painful and swollen joints, fever, chest pain, hair loss, mouth ulcers, swollen lymph nodes, feeling tired, and a red rash which is most commonly on the face (discoid lupus).
How does acupuncture work for SLE?
Acupuncture reduces the damage of the membranes, tissues, organs, nervous system, and skin caused by an overactive immune response. It treats the root of the disease by putting the immune system back into balance. Acupuncture treats systemic lupus erythematosus by reducing inflammation, improving energy and vitality, and addressing the wide variety of symptoms that occur, such as alleviating or get rid of pain, nausea, vomiting, headaches, abnormal heart rhythms, swelling joints, difficulty breathing, hair loss, oral ulcers and rash, patchy skin color or Raynaud (fingers or toes color change when cold) etc.
Course of treatment
There are 10-15 acupuncture sessions in one course of treatment. Treatment frequency depends on individual condition. Chinese herbs work synergistically with acupuncture.
